Washington wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Is a wild animal that is active during the daytime rabid?
Rabies is a dangerous disease that affects a lot of wild animals. It affects the CNS (Central Nervous System) of the wild animal which often results in altered behavior. Rabies is a misconstrued disease with a lot of myths and false information revolving around it. Have you ever heard that if a nocturnal wild animal is active during the daytime it automatically means it is rabid? It is a very common infection but unfortunately, some of the many things that you might have heard about it may not be that accurate. So, here we are busting one of the most popular myths. The statement that a wild animal that is active during the daytime is rabid is not true. There are a couple of reasons why nocturnal animals may be seen during the day and it has nothing to do with rabies.

In search of food
An animal’s primary purpose in life is to hunt for food and find a safe place to hide from predators. If there is food available regardless of the time of day and the type of animal, the animal will respond. It is very common for wild animals to inform other animals of a good source of food if they happen to come across it. They go back to their pack of species and take them where the food is. If they wait until nightfall to go in search of this food, it might run out and they can miss their chance. This search and fight for food might occur during the daytime as well, so if you see any nocturnal wild animals during the daytime chances are, they are just looking for food to either eat or store for later.

For the sake of protection
Wild animals have a very strong instinct when it comes to sensing a predator. A wild animal, especially a mother, can pick up the scent of a dangerous predator and then suddenly be on the move. The mother protects its child from all threats and if any wild animal that is not nocturnal is nearby, the first instinct of the female is to pick up her children and run for the hills. It changes its location and is often seen scrambling from one place to another. Have you ever spotted wild animals scurrying away? It might just be saving its life.

Disturbance
If you spot a wild animal during the day, chances are it was disturbed and had to move because it sensed movement. The same can be observed in homes. If there was a nest of bats in the attic or an opossum who recently found its home under your shed, if you go in these areas your footsteps and thudding will be more than enough to alert the wild animal. In this case, it will want to be on the move so that in case there is any danger, it is safe and sound.

Do not rule out the possibility of rabies
The wild animal that is active during the daytime may not always be rabid. It can be out for eating, mating, or surviving. The chances of a wild animal being rabid because it is out during the daytime are quite slim today when urbanization is merging man into the wilderness. However, it is not entirely impossible. The wild animal may be out because it is infected with rabies. In such a case, notice the behavior of the animal from afar; if it is slow, lethargic, and looks sick, chances are it is rabid. Do not go near the wild animal and instead inform the nearest wildlife rehabilitation center and they will ensure no person is harmed along with the wellbeing of the wild animal.
